Clients of mine who have major pre-existing conditions like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, COPD, etc. have only one option for healthcare insurance and that’s Obamacare. Obamacare is guaranteed issue for anyone with major pre-existing conditions.
Now why do some people get a lower premium? If an individual or family is receiving a lower premium it is because they qualified for a subsidy. A subsidy is a type of financial aid.
You can be eligible for Advanced Premium Tax Break Subsidy if your income is between 100-400% above the Federal Poverty Level. Here are five things to know about a subsidy:
1. If you find a new job or your income changes, you need to go to the marketplace and change your income statement.
2. You may have to repay some of the money back.
3. Subsidy networks (doctors, locations) are VERY limited (many doctors don’t take subsidy plans because they don’t get paid for about 2-3 years from the government).
4. Subsidy plans are similar to HMO plans.
5. With your new salary/income, you’d no longer qualify for a premium tax credit, and you’d have to pay the full premium.
